Baldwin and fellow casino entrepreneur Shawn Scott arrived in Laos in 2007 with ambitious plans to build a casino business aimed partly at customers crossing the country’s borders.

The pair established Sanum Investments and partnered with Laotian conglomerate ST Group. Baldwin later testified that the investors initially committed around $7.5 million to the venture, which envisaged two casino resorts and several slot clubs.

Their biggest success was Savan Vegas, strategically located near the Friendship Bridge linking Laos with neighboring Thailand across the Mekong River. A planned second resort, Paksong Vegas, was never built.

The combined company would overtake the likes of Bally’s Intralot, Entain and Allwyn to become the second-largest listed global operator, behind only Flutter Entertainment in terms of combined adjusted EBITDA.

Some 80% of its EBITDA is expected to come from Italy and Spain, with 97% of its total EBITDA coming from markets in which it is the market leader.

Online sports would make up 48% of its adjusted EBITDA, followed by distributed gaming (27%) and casinos (25%).

The company currently has 10 games spanning themes such as football and cars, with content deliberately based around subjects already attracting attention on social media.

That familiarity is important. Swipe Games is not asking social-media users to learn an entirely new digital language when they arrive at a casino. Its proposition is that the behaviour they already perform almost instinctively – watch, decide, swipe, repeat – can become the gaming mechanic itself.

“The video itself is the game,” Yashin explains. “We are as quick as crash games, but the pattern and the feel are more like betting. We are combining two different worlds – betting and quick games.”
